The Power of Stories in Business - Annette Simmons
Friday Jul 22, 2022
Friday Jul 22, 2022
“The potential for creating novel brilliant solutions is not going to be found at one ivory tower or the other but in the middle, and we have to destigmatize what it looks like to be in the middle.” Annette Simmons
Working with each other, rather than against each other, is what the world needs especially in times of conflict. While competition is inherently human, it can as well be divisive and cause people to pull towards different directions instead of working towards achieving a common goal. Annette Simmons is passionate about having collaborative narratives, and believes that storytelling is a tool that can enable people to see the bigger picture.
Annette Simmons is a successful consultant and author of five books including her most recent, Drinking From a Different Well: How Women’s Stories Change What Power Means in Action
(2021)
Simmons’ solo career started in 1997 with the success of her first book Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work (AMACOM, 1997) a deep examination of the micro-behaviors that discourage truth telling, information sharing and resource re-allocation. As a follow up Annette developed a facilitation guide called, A Safe Place for Dangerous Truths:Using Dialogue to Overcome Fear and Distrust at Work (AMACOM, 1998), full of tips for sharing truth in a safe way as well as principles and tools to shift the “truth telling” norms for one-on-one conversations and meetings. Her book about storytelling, The Story Factor (Basic Books, 3rd ed. 2019) introduced the business use of storytelling and was named one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time (Penguin, 2009). She followed it with a workbook designed to develop a reader's “six stories” titled Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins: How to Use Your Own Stories to Communicate with Power and Impact (AMACOM, 2nd ed. 2015)
She started out with a marketing degree from Louisiana State University (1983) and a move to Australia that provided ten years of international business experience with Ericsson and J. Walter Thompson. Annette returned to the USA to earn a Masters Degree in social psychology and adult education at North Carolina State University in 1994.
Annette has been featured on CNBC’s Power Lunch, NPR’s Market Watch, talk radio programs, quoted in Fortune, Working Woman, Harvard Business Review, The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and dozens of other respected publications. In addition to English her books have been published in Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, German and Russian.
In today’s episode, Annette talks about the power of storytelling, and why it is important to have collaborative narratives when looking for solutions to shared problems.

At an early age, I read books that started me on this lifelong quest of believing that if you just work hard enough, you can figure it out.
I facilitated this form of dialogue, and then eventually realized that storytelling was the magic tool to help someone to see a situation through another's eyes.
When we're trying to maximize our potential, we need to be able to combine somebody else's narrative with our narrative into a bigger picture that includes us both.
If we don't learn how to tell our story, and take someone on a little field trip about what we've seen, they can't see it.
I help people learn how to create collaborative narratives, and work together and find opportunities that they just can't see when they're in silos.
As long as people are arguing from these polar opposites, they are wasting the time that they could be creating solutions.
The potential for creating novel brilliant solutions is not going to be found at one ivory tower or the other but in the middle, and we have to destigmatize what it looks like to be in the middle.
We've optimized this idea that you can solve metrically, and therefore have scored badly in solving the things that just can't be measured.
Creating potential is almost always a function of building collaborative relationships with other people.
Commercial break
The first four books that I wrote were really kind of power with strategies instead of power over strategies.
One of the things that I'm finding is that people with the collaborative narrative don't just want to win, but they want to protect.
One of the problems with a strictly competitive is that it makes us think that harm is just the cost of doing business.
This particular book takes you through the stories that women tell that men don't, and takes you through the idea that moral wins actually undercut competitive wins.
We need to do is we need to re-define harm avoidance, as something other than risk avoidance.
We've got to learn how to redesign the way we keep track of who we are, and how successful we are, and women have a talent for it.
It is time to redesign what power means in terms of the logistical design of systems so that women will be more attracted to these top jobs.
Companies are going to have to provide the opportunity to do good as well as to do well, if they're going to attract women.
My hope for this new book is I want women to not feel like they have to suck up to the guys in charge, but to feel like they have an opportunity to educate the guys in charge.
Women have to start believing that they can see things that are invisible from a competitive narrative.
Start trusting yourself, and start taking people on a field trip about what you know is true.

Soul Language - Lisa Dadd

Monday Jul 11, 2022
“Your soul language may be very different from all those people telling you that you have to find success in a certain way.“ Lisa Dadd
How can leaders connect with their innermost self and manifest it in their daily interactions?
For years, people have been searching for ways and tools that can help them find out who they really are, and their life’s purpose. Lisa Dadd has been working with leaders to help them tap into their natural gifts, talents and abilities, through expanding their awareness and helping them understand their soul languages.
Lisa Dadd spent 15 years in the competitive industry of corporate healthcare, mastering strategic sales, marketing and management skills, from one of the world’s largest healthcare companies. In addition to the success, climbing the corporate ladder offered, was a deep sense her greatest potential was yet to be realized. With nearly a decade of independent consulting, an intense training in leadership development and facilitation of social emotional learning programs, Lisa has uncovered an innate way to access that potential.
Leveraging a diagnostic tool called Soul Language, Lisa now works with innovative leaders to integrate an awareness of who they are at their core, into the way they do business. The success of her process is particularly related to her unique approach to sales training. She believes that selling is a critical communication skill for all of us to have, because whether we are selling a product, a service, or an idea, we all need to create buy-in. Soul Sales teaches the art of creating buy-in, through the enrolling language of one’s innate energy.
In today’s episode, Lisa talks about how she uses the Soul Language as a tool to help people connect to themselves and others. She also talks about her book and why she decided to write it.

Book: Finding Fabulous: Paving the Path Between Paycheck and Passion
Transforming from corporate to business made me realize that I needed to redefine success for myself and what that looked like.
I work with business owners and leaders in their own soul language and put that filter on the way they do business.
Sometimes the thing that is our super strength and brings us joy, may also be our kryptonite that takes energy out of us.
Put your own unique filter on things because everything either works or fails, but the question is whether it aligns with who you are.
When I came across the soul language tool, we started diving into what that was, and how we could use it.
I use it to determine how to bring personal growth and business together in a successful way.
Commercial break
I always had this niggling in the back of my mind that I would write a book one day.
I started interviewing people because I wanted to hear from everyday ordinary people.
There were a lot of commonalities even though everybody followed their own way.
I realized that the summary of it all was that actually most people love, especially initially, what they're doing and what they're involved in until the environment changes unfavorably.
Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get your foundation under you as an entrepreneur.
Anyone who tells you they're an entrepreneur and they've never failed is not really one.
Entrepreneurs are willing to live a short time the way no one else will, so that they can live the rest of their lives the way no one else can.
Your soul language may be very different from all those people telling you that you have to find success in a certain way.
My book brought me on my path to create my business, which now pays me.
For most people, they’re never going to make a million dollars selling their books, but it can help with the journey towards the million dollars by helping you get very clear about you're trying to accomplish.
Life is speaking to us each and every day, the question is whether we're slowing down to listen to it.

RISE Hypnotic Meditation - Mary Welp
Friday May 20, 2022
Friday May 20, 2022
”The physical is exemplifying what's happening in the mental, and when we don't live from our soul’s purpose, it has an effect on our body both mentally and physically.” Mary Welp
If left uncontrolled, many of the unhelpful human states such as stress and anxiety can take over and become a source of pain. By enhancing mind-body control, people are able to exert more control over their thoughts and perceptions, thus improve the quality of life lived. This is according to Mary Welp, who also notes that such healing affects a whole generation and not only the individual.
Mary Welp is a certified hypnotherapist specializing in Hypnotic Meditation. After 20 years of private practice as a Craniosacral therapist and 14 years as a certified hypnotherapist, she launched RISE Hypnotic Meditation to teach others how to bring meaningful, positive changes to their lives. She teaches a direct, easy, adaptable practice in 4 steps: Relax, Imagine, Suggest, and Empower.
Mary helps those who are interested in self-improvement or anyone would like to get rid of a bad habit, fear, or imprint. She works within the following areas but not limited to: boundaries, social anxiety, sports performance, self-confidence, fear of rejection, optimism, procrastination, letting go of anger, guilt, improving sleep, grief and loss, and relationships. Her practice allows anyone to turn their attention inward to make a shift for the better in order to become a healthier, happier person.
Since the pandemic, Mary has shifted her practice from one-on-one sessions to teaching. She now travels and teaches a three-hour workshop across the country which she likes to refer to as a marriage of meditation and self-hypnosis. Her mission is to spread this self-healing therapy to as many people as possible.
Mary loves being a grandmother and lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband Jim. Aside from publishing her first book, RISE, Mary has also co-authored the book “The Ultimate Guide to Self-Healing Vol 5”, currently #1 on Amazon in Spirituality, Journaling, Holistic Medicine and Mind-Body connection.
In today’s episode, Mary talks about how she uses hypnotic meditation to help her clients improve themselves and live a life of purpose.

I've been doing private practice for a long time, and I started with bodywork then later got my hypnotherapy license and I started marrying the two therapies together.
For the last year and three months, I've been traveling and teaching RISE as a three-hour workshop, teaching the steps and talking about why and how it works.
I realized the diversity and definitiveness of self-hypnosis, and it does shift and change things giving your subconscious the opportunity to reprogram a little bit.
As we grow, learn and we change, we get to have a more stable emotional, grounding way of life.
A lot of people get stuck and get themselves in a hole, because of what life expects of us which normally isn't who we are.
The physical is exemplifying what's happening in the mental, and when we don't live from our soul’s purpose, it has an effect mentally and physically on our body.
It's really about giving us the opportunity to live our highest goals and dreams.
We have this opportunity to, not just have meaningful lives for ourselves, but also for those that follow us.
When we do effect change in ourselves, it definitely has a ripple effect.
Commercial Break
I've written the rise hypnotic meditation book so that people can pick it up, read it, and know and how and why it works.
When we're given that opportunity to sit and look at ourselves and our part in it, that opens up the door for change.
When we have that intention to identify something that we need to change in ourselves, it shifts it.
Tension is who you think you should be, and relaxation is who you are.
If you scan your body now and then and connect with where you feel tension in your body, and breathe into that, you're going to be more authentically yourself.

Many people have had some darkness happen in their childhood, and that held true for me at four years old.
I spent the majority of my childhood deeply impoverished and homeless, lived with over 30 different families between eight to 12 years old.
I was adopted by my racist grandmother when I was 12 years, got high for the first time at 12, drunk when I was 13 years and by the time I was 15 years, I was expelled from school for selling drugs.
I eventually got a high school diploma and went to work but got fired and started to think to myself what the solution for poverty, homelessness and abuse was.
I made a declaration of myself that by the time I was 21, I wanted to make $100,000 a year, legally.
I landed a job with a fortune 10 company, and started making six figures, but my life became a disaster.
I decided that I was going to stop negotiating with myself and work for results, no excuses.
Trauma is not about the abuse but the theft of identity that we carry with us.
The brain's only real true function is to make sure you survive.
In the three years after I decided to heal, I came to the realization that the truth about healing trauma is discovering and creating your identity.
My goal at Think Unbroken is very simple, end generational trauma in my lifetime through education and information by any means necessary.
The number one thing that I try to do when people come in, is teach them practical skills, but also the foundational understandings of causation and correlation.
You have got to get to that place to build the confidence in yourself, and be willing to have the courage to step through the threshold of the unknown, and find out whether who you think you are, is true or not.
Commercial break
The mindset is what you think, which becomes what you speak, and your words become your actions and your actions become your reality.
I teach people when they come into coaching with me to be kind to themselves.
When you understand the truth about your mindset, and how you've been set up for failure from the jump, that you have to make conscientious decisions and choices to build the life that you want.
Authenticity is such a big part of the human experience and those who have suffered trauma, learn how to be inauthentic because they have to.
The best part about this is recognizing the truth that who you are today does not have to be who you are tomorrow.
The truth about life is that everything that you want is all possible, but you have to be willing to do everything possible to get results, no excuses.

I discovered that I am a highly sensitive person through my hellacious corporate career.
I felt so empowered and emboldened in my temperament, once I learned what it was, and that it contains a myriad of innate superpower.
A lot of people who are highly sensitive don't know it, and so they don't take pride in their temperament.
When I learned this of myself, I could not help but choose to further a movement of spreading HSP awareness and championing HSPs to thrive in a world that does not cater to our temperament.
What has really been a huge advantage to me and running my business successfully is hiring an aligned team.
Let your inner compass guide you in ways that are going to help you run your business in a way that's in alignment with your integrity.
I consider myself as a self-advocacy authority, because we are the authorities of our own lives, minds and bodies.
Listening to our intuition and choosing to take action to support it is a form of self-advocacy, and it's powerful.
Commercial break
We all need adequate sleep as human beings, and with that everything is double for HSPs.
Whether the clients that come to me are fully aware that they're HSP, or not, they're all excited to learn, which is a joy.
I consider myself an interpersonal communication and relationship strategist because relationships are all about effective communication.
When we learn about, and understand ourselves, it is easier for us to self-advocate, which is by effectively communicating to others in our relationships.
You advocate for yourself, once you have an understanding of your gifts, and then you make choices, specifically to champion and respect your integrity.
The foundation of my practice is self-reverence, which means having deep respect and admiration for yourself.
Abundance is your birthright, claim it.

My journey has been about finding my place and my purpose, and helping awaken people and get them aligned with who they are.
When I'm working with my clients, it's about teaching them what they love to do, and who they are on a soul level so that they can just have that money come to them.
Everyone over the last couple years has really had to think about things differently, and find new ways of reinventing themselves.
One of the things for me was finding ways of working less and making more.
The point is to figure out how to set and maintain the level of income that I want going forward, and that's usually a mindset ceiling.
When we get so stressed out about money, our body releases cortisol which makes it not work right.
One thing that I've noticed is that when I start to get stressed about money, I pay attention and I head it off before it gets full blown.
The biggest problem that I find when I'm working with people is that they recognize there's a problem, but don't really have any idea or solution of how to get out of it.
The worst thing that we do to ourselves, is compare ourselves to other people.
One thing that I learned and help my clients with is, it doesn't matter what someone else is doing, we all have a unique proposition and a way that we help.
One thing that sometimes people miss is not realizing who they are is their formula, and they start to complicate it to be more.
It's that authenticity of stepping into who you really are that is attractive to everyone else, and which creates the easiest path of success.
A lot of times, it's just giving my client the permission by laying it all out for them and telling them that they can walk into this.
Commercial break
The key is doing the things that I'm good at because there's a big clarity and understanding why you're doing it.
One thing I realized when I was in my law of attraction coaching program was to really go with the flow of life.
Acceptance, and finding the natural way that you're designed to operate is very key in getting rid of the struggle and getting into our own bliss in the search for pleasure.
Get help for whatever hurdle you are working through it, because nobody out there that is successful did it on their own.
Live your life in authenticity and understanding your why on doing it.

Thursday Jan 06, 2022
“The most freeing thing that you'll ever give yourself is realizing that all the answers are within you.” Nicole Laino
At any level, it is important that people learn to take responsibility for their actions and the resulting outcomes. This ensures that there is continuous improvement and the people are able to move forward towards achieving their goals. Our guest today, Nicole Laino, helps people get past their blocks to achieve more, and says it is important to start with a change of how you view self and the world as a whole.
Nicole Laino is a startup founder (Hilo CRM), brand strategist, peak performance coach, Reiki master/teacher and the host of the Limitless Entrepreneur podcast. She spent 6 years in corporate at a Fortune 100 company before leaving her career for entrepreneurship. She combines proven marketing strategies with brain-based science, and her experience as a Rapid Manifestation Method Practitioner to help her clients overcome their limiting beliefs, develop their authentic brand, and achieve massive success.

I grew up being an actor which was what I felt was my calling. [3:37]
I later got offered a position in wall street and when I didn't desire the comfort of a paycheck anymore, I left. [3:50]
I later moved into entrepreneurship by looking at how I could use all of my gifts and deciding how I fit into this world. [4:35]
Being a coach, intuitively kind of organically evolved and what I do now is exactly where I'm meant to be. [5:00]
Every step I take into expansion of that is about being more allowing, being more in tune and being more in alignment with who I truly am. [5:11]
When working with men that are not fully in their potential, there's always something that is causing them to either play small, or not fully step into their next level. [6:10]
With women, there are far more layers and it's so much more about the conditioning in place of what was acceptable and what was not. [6:28]
We think it's the world putting these pressures and responsibilities on us but we are the ones who accept them. [9:32]
Sometimes the hardest thing for us to do is to realize that we're just one question away from fixing our own problem. [11:20]
The greatest responsibility and the most freeing thing that you'll ever give yourself is realizing that all the answers are within you. [11:49]
Most people put way too much stock into getting the strategy but it's about finding the ones that are right for you. [14:45]
For the moon stuff and human design, it is really about pointing to the areas that need to be healed within ourselves. [19:47]
If our energy is all over the place and we need to rest, we give ourselves permission to do that for that finite period of time. [20:37]
Commercial break [21:24]
As far as part of my success, I know that I'm a voracious learner and I love to dive deep into subjects and take that knowledge and lead with it. [24:34]
A lot of that journey which is also a struggle and challenge is to trust that I know enough to lead with what I know. [24:51]
I realized that I communicate best when it can speak to it from either the perspective of a client where I've seen someone's journey unfold, or my own. [25:19]
I get people who are feeling like they are not living their potential that they feel called to live, and yet they're not able to walk as powerfully. [26:47]
Human Design gives us the map to show you where you are in your sheds and where you are out of alignment, as well as where you are not leaning into your power. [27:08]
People come to me with small traumas and I use a form of tapping, which is what the Rapid Relief technique is all about. [27:26]
A lot of women come to me feeling like they've burned out because they have leaned too much into the masculine energy. [28:25]
It's amazing how sometimes the answer is to do less of the right things than to do more of the wrong things, and you will make more money. [29:01]
When you are in alignment things feel good and the first stage of work is getting to that point of trusting. [33:07]
Whatever is happening to your life, the first step is looking at the challenges that you face in your life with curiosity instead of criticism. [34:28]
If you can contemplate things instead of criticizing, you will watch your world unfold so naturally and so beautifully. [34:50]

Dear Oprah - L. Y. Marlow
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
Tuesday Dec 14, 2021
“It doesn't matter where you come from or what you did, you can step into who you were put on this earth to be. “ L. Y. Marlow
Breaking historical patterns doesn’t happen easily. This is especially true when it runs across multiple generations. It requires a strong will power and commitment to break off and out of such circumstances and that is what our guest today L. Y. Marlow, did. Marlow went through years of hard work and persistence to be a different story as well as to enable multiple generations tell their story and change it for the better.
L.Y. Marlow is an award-winning author and sought-after empowerment advocate and influencer whose life journey took her from a legacy of domestic violence to the opulence of corporate America and now to a life devoted to inspiring other women. L.Y.’s story would be notable enough given her tenacity to shatter the status quo, but it would be her courageous decision to step down from a progressive and stellar 20+ year corporate career to pursue her passion and write her award-winning Color Me Butterfly—the compelling and heart wrenching story behind the national organization she founded Saving Promise—inspired by five generations of mothers and daughters in her family that survived more than sixty years of domestic violence, including her granddaughter, a little girl named Promise.
This heartfelt and captivating story of tragedy to triumph inspired her memoir Don’t Look at the Monster: One Woman’s Journey to Embrace a Purposeful Life and MonsteRise—a women empowerment brand to inspire women to confront their fears and embrace their passion, purpose and power!
In today’s episode, Marlow will talk about her life journey and the events that led her to the business she does today.

My journey started nearly fifty years ago, when I was in corporate America and I was at the top of my game. [4:27]
I grew up in poverty and in one of the most crime infested projects in Philadelphia. [4:40]
I was the first in my family to eventually leave Wilson Park and go to school for 16 years at night to earn three degrees. [4:58]
I had my daughter when I was 17 and was in an abusive relationship and I made a decision I was going to get up out of there. [5:20]
It would be 20 years into my career, that I got a call that my daughter had almost been killed through domestic violence which ultimately changed the shift of my life. [5:50]
I had published my first book called “Colour Me Butterfly,” about four generations that were trapped, suffered and survived 60 plus years of domestic violence. [6:03]
I wrote a letter to Oprah, about how my daughter was strangled and nearly killed for the second time and how, as a mother, was in pain. [6:50]
The words eventually led me to launch a national organization called Save me promise. [7:38]
I walked away from corporate America and had no idea how to do that or what my potential was because I was going through a tough time. [7:53]
No matter what I was coming against, I knew my life was purposeful and I was going to not only step up out of that, but pay it forward to help other women. [8:58]
Whatever you want in your life is 80% of mindset and 20% of strategy. [10:46]
My breakthrough in my mindset came when talking to a friend and I said that everything is a gift, a lesson or a blessing. [10:54]
Now even when I get annoyed I try to look for the gift, the lesson or the blessing in the situation. [12:45]
I now have come to acknowledge in these last few years that Oprah did me a favor by saying no. [13:29]
I had to go on and figure out how to build this organization on my own and step into it in a way that I not only believe in it, but it is me. [13:59]
I took my mission, my vision for Saving Promise and I launched a second company called Master rise. [16:16]
I teach women how to launch their business where I have a three-day intense mastermind and by the end of that third day you have a blueprint and on a path to launching your business in 90 days. [16:30]
I'm so good at helping women to strategize and to step outside of their lives and see a different perspective and how to get from point A to point B. [16:54]
Commercial break. [18:18]
I have learnt to be resilient and I didn't understand it until I was looking back at those times when I struggled where despite of the situation I always come out on the other end of it with resilience. [19:56]
I've learned to be vulnerable and stopped trying to put up a face that everything is perfect and also learned to accept help. [20:45]
Everything in your life is a gift, a lesson or a blessing and remember it is not always bow wrapped. [26:24]
